My friend tells me she’s recently moved and is not adjusting well to the new food. I sympathise because I know what that feels like.
“Give it time,” I say. “Most tastes are acquired.”
Like her, I had simple tastes once. My favourite meal was rice and beans. Then I was introduced to potato salad. Though refreshing on the tongue, it was always cold, it had an usual texture and was a little bland.
I quickly gave up potato salad for a spicier life – but that lasted only a little while.
Even now, I still long for the days of spicy soups, infused with tropical heat, the mysteries of Asia and a touch of love.
